Verbiest Foundation is named after Ferdinand Verbiest, a Jesuit missionary from Belgium, who was a eminent astronomer and a teacher of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. The foundation was established in 1982 by the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM – Scheut) at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).

Verbiest Foundation endorses and supports many activities at Verbiest Institute KU Leuven (V.I. KUL.) and Verbiest Institute Taipei (VIT);
Since May 1, 2009, VF is also sponsoring Chinese College Leuven. In 2017, it established "China Verbiest Cultural Exchange Association" in Taipei,
Through these institutions, the foundation actively promotes academic research on the history of the Chinese church, as well as pastoral cooperation with the Chinese church. Verbiest Foundation priority is to develop a new relationship with the Chinese Church and actively respond to the pastoral letter of Pope Benedict XVI.

The most effective way to help the Chinese church is to invest in the formation of church personnel. Therefore, the foundation provides support for the training of church leaders (priests, female and male religious, and faithful) in Mainland China. We follow through the projects establishing direct contact with the pertinent Chinese dioceses or religious groups, supervising the good use of donations.
We provide scholarships for the initial and continuous formation of priests, religious and lay leaders, giving priority to domestic training programs.
We also support specialization studies of Church personnel through scholarships to some colleges in Europe, Taiwan or the Philippines to update their formation and training for evangelization. After they have returned from their studies, they join various local seminaries and training institutions to continue promoting Church formation at home.

The foundation also actively responds to China’s requests for help and (on a small scale) supports some social development projects in the dioceses of northwestern China, namely in Gansu, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia and Ningxia.
